Yet Another Canonical XML
15:31, 16 Nov 1999 UTC | Simon St.Laurent

In one of its fastest updates, the W3C has published a new draft of Canonical XML, Version 1.0 a mere six days after its predecessor.

Notable changes include:

  • The Attribute Declaration Information Items section is deleted.
  • New sections for Entity Start Marker, Entity End Marker, CDATA Start Marker, CDATA End Marker, and Namespace Declaration Information Items have been added, though only to say that this information is not preserved.
  • Much of the discussion appears to reference a new (unpublished) Infoset document.
  • 'Unknown Entity Information Items' are now called 'Skipped Entity Information Items'.
  • A production for PITarget has been added.
  • Composed Characters have returned.
  • Rules for whitespace now vary slightly depending on whether the content was in a CDATA section or not.
  • References now include Unicode and an old working draft, Character Model for the World Wide Web.

For a now-expired working group, the XML Syntax Working Group is publishing a lot! The XML Core Working Group is expected to continue this work.
